When You Are in the "Shark Tank" or on the Hot Seat!

A few years ago, my son's former neighbors appeared on "Shark Tank." The whole family, including the parents and all 3 children, appeared on camera in front of the Sharks and the viewing audience. They impressed the Sharks and were awarded the loan. Not only was their business idea a winner, but they personally and professionally came across as winners. They all spoke very well in front of the camera, including the children. That undoubtedly had a great deal to do with their securing that $100,000 loan.

Contrast that with another contestant on the same program. He had a very good business idea but he had a hard time presenting it effectively. He seemed to get in his own way. He looked good, but fumbled the hard, but expected, questions. I was rooting for him, but he did not get the loan.

Most of us have seen "Shark Tank", and we know exactly what to expect. If you ever find yourself in a similar position, in the "Shark Tank," or in the Hot Seat, with a life-changing business idea, a difficult podcast interview, an important presentation, or even appearing in court, here are a few tips:

1. Do serious research prior to the podcast, show or event. Identify the types of questions that will probably be asked. Develop your answers to those questions including the hard questions you hope they won't ask. Those are the questions that will be. Be prepared. Actually, be over-prepared!

2. Listen, really listen!, to the question that is asked. Not the question you think they asked or that you wanted them to ask. Take time, even a several seconds or so, to think before you talk. You will look better and sound better. You will appear calm, thoughtful, and intelligent.

3. Be brief and to the point. If you end up speaking too long without getting to the point, wandering aimlessly in verbal discourse, people may think you are prevaricating or you don't know what you are talking about. If someone asks you the time, don't tell them how to build a watch.

4. Critically think through and develop your presentation or responses. and practice! Yes, practice, even record yourself and analyze your speech and image.
